WA man who ‘tried to drown son’ at beach unresponsive during bedside court hearing

A Pilbara man accused of attempting to drown his young child in the ocean in front of horrified onlookers has appeared in Karratha Magistrate’s Court via a hospital bed hearing.The 26-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, allegedly took his five-year-old son down to the Dampier foreshore at low tide about 6.15am on Monday and attempted to drown him.The scene of the confronting event at the Dampier foreshore. Credit: FacebookA group of women taking part in a fitness class nearby noticed the boy was in trouble and ran to rescue him, with one woman aged in her 30s allegedly punching the man several times and injuring her hand.During the father’s brief appearance in court on Tuesday morning, ABC Pilbara reported prosecutors said the man was assaulted by two bystanders who intervened in the alleged attempt to murder his child.Police said the boy was taken back to shore and comforted by witnesses. He was later taken to hospital but is understood to be uninjured.LoadingThe owner of the fitness group is yet to speak publicly about the ordeal, cancelling Tuesday morning’s class and requesting privacy from the media.The accused man, from Nickol, a suburb of nearby Karratha, is charged with one count of attempting unlawfully to kill, two counts of assault with intent to commission a crime, one count of reckless driving, and one count of no authority to drive (never held).ABC Pilbara reported the man was unresponsive as he had his charges read to him on Tuesday.
